Macalester coach John Leaney had been steadily developing a conference and regional power and in 1998 it all came together as a veteran Scot team reached the impossible dream, the national championship, the first NCAA Division III national title ever achieved at Macalester.
Coasting through the regular-season at 17-1 and winning their second of what would become five straight MIAC championships, the Scots beat Gustavus 1-0 in the first round of the playoffs and toppled the University of Chicago 3-0 to avenge their only defeat of the season. After a 1-1 deadlock in the third round, the Scots knocked off Washington University on penalty kicks to make the Final Four, where they opened with a 1-0 victory over Willamette (Ore.) to reach the title match. Going up against the powerhouse College of New Jersey, the Scots achieved their dream when Tawni Epperson netted the game's only goal late in the fourth and final overtime period.
Macalester nearly pulled off back-to-back national crowns, reaching the NCAA championship match the following year, but were denied the big trophy with many of the same key players as the '98 team.
