Jim Berquist was an excellent football player at Macalester, starting three years and earning All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors three times.
The Scots had winning records all three years he started. Berquist led the 1957 team - one of Macalester's best - to a 6-1-1 second-place record and was named the league's Most Valuable Player.

Berquist was also an outstanding basketball and baseball player for the Scots.

He graduated from Macalester in 1958 and began teaching, coaching and serving as athletic director at Hinckley Public Schools, where he remained for 29 years. In 1969 he completed a master's degree in counseling at the University of Wisconsin, Superior. Berquist was named Region 7A Athletic Director of the Year in 1982, and the new football/track field in Hinckley was recently named "Berquist Field" in his honor.

Berquist served in the U.S. Army and was active in Lions Club and the St. Paul Lutheran Church. He also was an avid fisherman and hunter. He died suddenly following a heart attack in July, 1987.
