Macalester’s long tradition of producing great women runners helped get started by the exploits of Shona Hillman in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Since she set the stage, Macalester has developed quite a list of standout distance runners. Shona came to Macalester in 1977 and immediately was a big contributor, placing 10th at the state and 25th at the regional cross country meet and in track placing second at the state meet in the 5,000-meter run. She continued to develop as a runner over the next three years at Macalester and was always one of the top state and regional finishers in cross country and the distance events in track. Shona finished her collegiate career in style, placing sixth at the national AIAW track and field championships in 1981 in the 5,000-meter run to earn All-America honors. A Cum Laude graduate, Dr. Hillman earned her medical degree at the University of Minnesota.
