Macalester's athlete of the year in 1950, Earl W. Bowman, still holds football records at Macalester. Bowman was an All-MIAC selection three consecutive years (1947-49), and co-captain the 1949 team. Among the records Bowman set were: most yards rushing in a single game- 175 (vs. Eau Claire, 1945), career rushing attempts -546, and total yards rushing (career) -2851yards. He once ran 94 yards for a touchdown against Eau Claire in 1945.
As captain of the 1950 track team, Bowman's pole vault of 13’ 1 3/4 ‘ broke the state record which he had set the previous year. He also earned two letters playing basketball. Following graduation, he played semi-professional football and basketball for three years.
Bowman went on to spend 15 years as a teacher, coach and administrator in Minneapolis public schools . He returned to Macalester in 1969 to become assistant to the president, and later director of development, dean of students, and vice president of student affairs. He later served as vice president and dean of external programs of Metropolitan Community College in Minneapolis.
Bowman has been the recipient of the "Distinguished Citizen' ' citation from the Macalester Alumni Association. He lived in Minneapolis until his passing in 2005.
