A former Marine Corps officer, Harry Hadd enjoyed an outstanding career at Macalester as a football and basketball standout.

Hadd arrived at Macalester from St. Paul Central High School in 1938 and immediately made an impact on the football team, which was enjoying some of the most successful seasons in Mac gridiron history.  A 4-3 season in 1938 was followed by a 4-1-3 campaign under new coach Ollie Olson, as the Scots earned their highest conference finish in 14 years.

The Scots were even better in 1940, going 5-1-1, and they finished at 5-3 in Hadd's senior year.  He received all-conference honors after his senior season.

Hadd anchored one of the tackle positions as a tough hitter, and was known as one of the "Heavenly Twins" along with Sid Shogren, the tackle on the other side of the defensive line.  "It was his tenacity and stick-to-it-ness that made him such a good athlete," remembers Shogren.  "His work ethic really rubbed off on the team."

The Scots had some solid basketball teams during these years, and though Hadd wasn't a top scorer, his presence was crucial.  "He was a stabilizer," Shogren said.  "He played under the hoop and was kind of an enforcer."

Hadd graduated in 1942 and went to active duty in the Marines, serving in World War II.  His career since the war has included leadership positions in Japan, Korea, and Italy, a military landing in Lebanon, a stint at Marine Corps headquarters, and service as head logistics instructor for five Marine Corps schools in Quantico.  After retiring from the Marines in 1968, he became a real estate broker.
