Macalester has won more MIAC championships in track than in any other sport, and it was athletes like Harlan Westrell who began this tradition in the early 1930s.  A major contributor on the championship teams of '33, '34, and '35, he established a school record in the 440-yard run which stood for 15 years, a feat he accomplished in just his first year of varsity competition.

As a junior, Westrell was captain of the '35 team which captured the fourth straight league title for coach David Primrose.  The Scots, however, placed second to St. Olaf in 1936 even through Westrell and three teammates set the state record in the mile relay.

In addition to earning four letters as one of the stars of the track team, he received three football letters, alternating between halfback and end for coach Al Gowans.

Six years after graduating, Westrell went into the Army's Counter Intelligence Corps; he served in the Far East, New Guinea, and the Philippines, receiving a battlefield commission and the Bronze Star.  His last military assignment was as commandant of the 441st Counter Intelligence School at General MacArthur's headquarters in Tokyo.

Westrell then pursued a distinguished 27-year career with the Central Intelligence Agency, with both Washington and overseas assignments; on retirement he was awarded the Intelligence Medal of Merit.

He has been active in many volunteer activities including AARP, Boy Scouts, and his church
