Following graduation from Macalester, Helling coached football at Jackson, Detroit Lakes, and Minneapolis-Washburn high schools, and the University of North Dakota. His 1966 UND team won the Pecan Bowl.

A former resident of New Brighton, Helling later served as the associate executive director of the Minnesota State High School League.
