Harold M. Smith was a letter winner in tennis and golf, but it was in basketball that he excelled the most.  Smith was selected all-state in 1937.  In that year, Smith's outside shooting helped lead the Scots to their first conference championship.  At the end of the season The Mac Weekly commented on Smith's play, "Smith, ranked as one of the best shots and ball handlers in the conference, will undoubtedly leave a big gap in next year's starting lineup."  As a freshman on the 1933 team, he was the second leading scorer in the conference.  Smith was also a member of another Macalester championship team, the tennis squad in 1935.  He was selected as captain of the 1936 team.

Smith resides in Minneapolis after retiring as golf coach from Anoka High School.
