In the winters of 1961-62 and 1962-63, the top team in the MIAC was the Macalester Scots, who won their 11th and 12th all-time conference championships under Macalester Hall of Fame Coach Hank Frantzen.

The 1962 team tied St. Thomas for the MIAC title and out-scored their opponents 55-18, breaking up a string of nine straight titles by Minnesota-Duluth.  Macalester’s 1963 conference champion Scots played indoor hockey for the first time and went 12-2 in league play, out-scoring their rivals by a dominant 94-42 margin.  Three players made the all-conference team and five more gained Honorable Mention MIAC status.

Following the ’62 title, the Mac Weekly reported: “Graduation will see only Captain Bud Bjerken, Larry Leach and Al Olson leaving; thus next year returning will be 13 veteran lettermen in which the team should be able to win the championship outrightly.”

With the last championship in ’63, Mac had tied St. Thomas for most conference titles won at that time with 12 each.  Tom Weyl ranked second in the MIAC in points and was joined on the first-ever hockey All-MIAC squad by teammates Jim Volker and John Bonte.
