One of the top swimmers ever to compete at Macalester, James DeWeerd was an NAIA All-American all four years at Macalester and won the 1967 national championship in the 200-yard freestyle and the 1965 national championship in the 400-yard medley relay, along with teammates James Anderson, Darwin Klockers and Joseph Mannikko. He established NAIA national records in two events, earned All-American honors eight times in individual events and seven times in relays and consistently won conference championships in freestyle events and relays.
DeWeerd served in the U.S. Navy from 1976 to 1978 and has been in the Naval Reserve since 1982. He has practiced orthopedic surgery in Stevens Point, Wis., since 1978. He has become the president of the St. Michael's Hospital medical staff; he is also president and chair of the board of Rice Clinic in Stevens Point. He has served as a Boy Scout counselor, YMCA Partners in Youth coach, and youth hockey officer.
