A four-year letter-winner from 1977 through 1981 and twotime team captain, Paul Bachman enjoyed a standout swimming career at Macalester and earned all-conference honors in 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981. He was twice named the winner of the department’s Thomas Gammel Award and established pool records in the 100 breaststroke.Bachman set school records in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events, and in all four seasons at Macalester he qualified for the national meet in the two breaststroke events. He was also a member of a school record-setting 400-yard medley relay.

Bachman has been a swim coach since graduating from Macalester and is currently in his 20th year of coaching at John Marshall High School in Rochester, Minnesota. As a coach, he has produced two NAIA national champions, seven Minnesota state high school individual champs and 15 All-Americans. He continues to volunteer ten hours a week with a local swim club.
