One of Macalester's best football players, Engwer received All-Conference honors four times in his backfield position during Macalester's glory years. He was the most valuable player on the college's league championship team in 1947 and was again named the team MVP in 1950 when he led the Scots to a 5-3-1 slate.

Following service in the U.S. Army during World War II, Engwer returned to his hometown of North St. Paul, where he was elected to the school board at the youthful age of 21. He also enrolled at Macalester at that time and played football for coach Dwight Stuessey. Following graduation, Engwer served as a sales representative for Wilson Sporting Goods and later went into public school administration as business manager for the North St. Paul/Maplewood School District. He held that post from 1952 to 1970. In 1963, Engwer became president of the Minnesota Association of School Business Officials. After 17 successful years in the school district, he ventured into the corporate world and became general manager at Arctic Midwest, a large distributor of Arctic Cat snowmobiles and Silverline boats. Engwer went back into school administration in 1972 as director of business affairs at Mounds View Schools. He has been on medical leave from that position since 1974 but remains active in church and community affairs such as the Lions Club, VFW, American Legion, Jaycees, the Snow Frolic Celebration and the North St. Paul Police Commission.
