Lee Schafer was the first Academic All-American at Macalester and a standout offensive lineman for the Scots. Schafer started every game in his Macalester career and was picked to the all-conference squad in 1981 and 1982. “Lee was a rare combination of perfect technique, ferociousness and intelligence on the offensive line,” praised former teammate John Condegelli. Schafer was selected as Macalester’s offensive player of the year as a sophomore.
Schafer is currently a business columnist for the Star Tribine newspaper, coming to the Star Tribune after 15 years as a corporate officer, consultant and investment banker in the Twin Cities. He has been a columnist for Twin Cities Business magazine and was senior editor for Corporate Report Minnesota.
Schafer and his Macalester teammates help helped transform Coach Tom Hosier’s program into a winning teams throughout the mid-80’s.
