George (Chet) Erickson participated in three different sports at Macalester - football, basketball, and track - and earned three varsity letters.
Mr. Erickson transferred to Macalester from Des Moines University in 1932 and quickly contributed to the College's football team. He played both offensive and defensive positions and excelled as a fullback and receiver, The Oct. 27, 1932 issue of the Mac Weekly reported: "Where Chet Erickson goes, the team goes. Chet has smashed his way into Minnesota football...He is probably the hardest man to block out of a play in the league, and to top this off he tosses and catches passes with skill." Mr. Erickson was chosen captain of the St. Paul Daily News All-State football team in 1932 as an end, was on the St. Paul Pioneer Press All-State squad that same year, and also was named to the Coaches' All-Star team.
He was a regular on the Macalester basketball squad for two years and also competed on the track and field team.
Prior to coming to Macalester, Mr. Erickson had studied engineering for three years. He graduated from Macalester in 1933 with a B.A. in education. After graduation he worked in architecture with a general contracting firm in Pontiac, Michigan. He retired in 1974 and later moved with his wife Ruby to Davenport, Iowa.
Active in community work, Mr. Erickson served on the Manson, Iowa, school board and was a member of the American Veterans and American Legion.
