A dominating lineman, George Wemeier was a four year letterman on some outstanding Macalester College football teams. Wemeier's blocking helped make Earl Bowman and Robert Engwer, both M Club Hall of Famers, dangerous all-conference backs, while his prowess on the defensive line succeeded in giving opponents fits. In his sophomore season Wemeier helped the Scots shock powerhouse Gustavus 20-12, handing the Gusties only their third MIAC defeat in six years. He got even better as a junior and senior and earned all-conference honors those two years. The 1950 team went 5-2-1 in league play, upsetting a highly-favored Duluth team rather easily, 27-6, and coming within just points of revenge-minded Gustavus, the conference champs. Wemeier was one of three Scots named all-conference following that memorable 1950 campaign.

After two years of military service, Wemeier became a highly respected fixture in Minnesota high school coaching circles. He coached and taught two years at Braham, followed by a nine-year assistant coaching stint at Patrick Henry High School in Minneapolis. In 1966 Wemeier was named head football coach at Washburn High School in Minneapolis, where he built a distinguished record and captured state championships in 1972 and 1977. His teams once went

60 straight games without a defeat and in the process registered 46 consecutive wins-a state record.

In 1984 Wemeier was named an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota. He currently serves as quarterback coach.
