Malcom Smiley '26 excelled as a quarterback and a quarter-miler for Macalester football and track teams in the 1920's.

As a football Scot, he earned three letters and captained the 1925 MIAC championship team that finished 5-2 including wins over Gustavus (34-7) and Hamline (26-0).

The 1926 yearbook said of his performance against Hamline: "Captain Smiley covered himself with much glory by making three touchdowns; one around end for 70 yards, one through the line for 12 yards, and returning a kick-off 97 yards for the other.  They couldn't stop him."

Mr. Smiley led the MIAC in scoring in 1925 and was named captain and quarterback of the 1925 Saint Paul Dispatch and Saint Paul Daily News All-State football teams.

He also captained four track letters participating in the 440, 880, mile relay, and low hurdles.  He placed first in the 880 run at the 1924 state track meet, and was part of the team that set a school record in the mile relay in 1924.

Following his graduation, Mr. Smiley coached teams at Saint Paul Johnson and Plainview High Schools.  At Johnson he coached football for 14 years and won the Saint Paul Conference championship in 1942.  He also coached track for seven years at Johnson.  At Plainview he coached football, track, and basketball.

Mr. Smiley resides in Clear Lake, Minnesota.
