An all-conference football player and MIAC discus champion in track & field, McGregor was a year-round athlete at Macalester, competing on the wrestling team for the Scots in the winter. In addition to being named to the St. Paul Pioneer Press all-conference football team as a center and linebacker, McGregor received Honorable Mention Little All-America honors. In his senior season Mac went 5-2 in the conference under Dwight Stuessy and was in contention for the MIAC crown until late in the season.

In track & field, McGregor helped lead Macalester to the MIAC championship as a junior in 1953, placing first in the discus.

McGregor is a 1972 recipient of the Macalester Alumni Citation Distinguished Citizen Award. He has served as the pastor of his congregation, president of the University District Improvement Association, and chairman of the Southeast Minneapolis Planning and Coordinating Committee. He has served in volunteer assignments in Africa.
