Ben Van Thorre had an outstanding career for the men’s basketball team, ranking second all-time at Macalester with 1,707 career points. A three-time All-MIAC selection, Van Thorre averaged over 17 points per game in each of his final three seasons. After making the All-First Year Team in 2001, he helped Macalester finish fourth in the conference and advance to the semifinals of the MIAC Tournament in 2002. As a senior, he led the Scots to an 18-9 overall record, 16 conference victories, a second-place finish in the MIAC regular-season standings and a spot in the finals of the MIAC playoffs. That year, Van Thorre led the conference in scoring and was named the MIAC Player of the Year and a first team All-American.
