Dick Butler earned ten varsity letters at Macalester; four in baseball and three each in football and basketball. He was a remarkable three-year starter who played halfback and fullback on

offense, linebacker on defense, returned kicks, punted and place-kicked. Butler was an all-conference first team halfback in 1939. During that season he scored half of his team's total points and rushed for over 100 yards in every game, finishing with over 1,000 yards on the season. Two years earlier he set the record for the longest punt return in Macalester's football history, charging 72 yards for a touchdown. The record still stands.

In basketball Butler led the freshman team to a 20-2 record and was a starting guard as a sophomore, junior and senior. A talented baseball player as well, Butler was among the league's leading hitters in each of his four seasons as a starter and was the team captain as a senior.

An honor student with a degree in economics and business administration, Butler worked 38 years at 3M, his final 18 as a financial division controller. In Detroit and St. Paul he worked in various divisions such as industrial engineering, personnel and cost accounting. He has been a youth baseball coach for ten years and remains active in golf and fast pitch softball leagues.
