Howard Hellickson has been praised for his outstanding character as much as he has been praised for his athletic achievements at Macalester.  Friends and teammates remember his athletic ability, concentration, and discipline.

Captain in three sports - football, baseball, and wrestling - Mr. Hellickson was named Most Valuable Player six times: once in 1969 for wrestling; twice, in 1967 and 1968, for baseball; and three times in football in 1966, 1967 and 1968.

Mr. Hellickson received honorable mention on the football all-conference team in his freshman and sophomore years and was the MIAC all-conference and the All-NAIA District 13 linebacker for 1968.

In wrestling, Mr. Hellickson placed second in the 191 lb. division of the conference in 1967 and 1968.  He was also the 177 lb. conference champion in 1969 and placed sixth in the NAIA National Tournament.  In 1967, 1968, and 1969, he was an all-conference baseball player.

Mr. Hellickson earned a total of 12 letters during his years at Macalester and established an athletic record that remains unsurpassed.

Following graduation, Mr. Hellickosn went to work on his family farm in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin.  He died October 6, 1974, in a farm accident.
