Hall of Fame
A graduate of the Class of 1940, Shirley Held stood out in basketball, golf, and football at Macalester. A three-year letterwinner in golf, Held placed second in 1939 at the state tournament. In football, Held won letters as a member of winning Macalester teams in 1938 and 1939. Held was especially strong in basketball, a sport in which he won three letters at Macalester. He was among the conference scoring leaders as a junior and senior and was an All-State selection both years. Held was also chosen to represent Minnesota college basketball players at a national AAU tournament.
A captain in the U.S. Air Force during WWII, Held went on to become a teacher, coach and administrator, and spent 30 years as a school superintendent, including 20 years in Worthington, Minn. A pillar of the Worthington community, Held has been retired since 1982.
