Ted Van arrived on the Macalester campus in 1943 and following his freshman year was drafted into World War II, where he served in the 10th Mountain Division Infantry.
Returning to Macalester after Army service in 1946, Ted became a standout member of the swimming and track & field teams and was the track team captain as a senior. He won the conference high jump championship twice and also placed high at the conference meets in the long jump.
Ted was a letter-winner in swimming as a junior and senior and placed both years at the MIAC meet in the backstroke. He was chosen by his classmates as the male who typlified the senior class.
He retired at age 70 as the President of the Van Paper Company and since then has climbed 10 of Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks. He is also an active skier, skater, hiker, swimmer, canoeist and bicyclist.
