Men’s Track & Field: Macalester Competes at Carleton, UW-La Crosse

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Macalester College men's track & field team sent a small group of athletes to UW-La Crosse on Thursday, with the bulk of the team competing at the Carleton Relays on Sunday in Northfield.

On Thursday, the highlight for Macalester at the Phil Esten Challenge was turned in by senior Henry Schonebaum (Faribault, Minn./Faribault), who posted a time of 50.19 in the 400 meters. The time ranks ninth all-time at Macalester. Senior Sebastian Stefanowicz (Portland, Ore./Valley Catholic) ran the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.88 and registered a personal best in the 100 meters with a time of 11.25. First year Drew Morral (Philippi, W. Va./Philip Barbour) ran the 100 in 11.19. In the field events, sophomore Ataa Mensah (St. Paul, Minn./Roseville) took 11th out of 29 competitors in the triple jump with a leap of 13.96 meters (45-9.75).

On Sunday at Carleton, sophomore John Irhke (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) won the 1500 meters with a time of 3:58.82, which ranks eighth on Macalester's all-time performance list. Also in the 1500, senior Tyler Edwards (Beaverton, Ore./Oregon Episcopal) finished third (4:01.79), junior Daniel Wiltse (Missoula, Mont./Hellgate) was fourth (4:02.32) and junior Quinn Hoisington (Seattle, Wash./Lincoln) took fifth (4:02.94).

Other Scots with wins on the track include senior Hamza Mahamud (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie), who finished first in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.14, senior Jay Lebakken (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina), who won the 800 meters with a time of 2:00.37, and sophomore Caleb Hatlevig (Stow, Mass./Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School), who took first in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 10:03.88.

Also in the 800, junior Kelvin Moresi (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) was fifth (2:04.86) and senior Thomas Malecha (Faribault, Minn.) was sixth (2:06.69). First year Michael Zhao (Beijing, China/Lake Ridge Academy) has a solid day in the sprints, taking fourth in the 100 meters (11.60) and finishing fifth in the 200 meters (23.54).

In the field events, senior Austin Mills (Eugene, Ore./Winston Churchill) won the discus with a toss of 42.96 meters (140-11) and took first in the hammer with a throw of 49.08 meters (161-0). Sophomore Artur Porto (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) won the shot put with a mark of 14.36 meters (47-1.5), took third in the discus (40.52/132-11) and was fourth in the hammer throw (31.95/104-10). First year Alex Peters (Belle Plaine, Minn./Jordan) placed second in the shot put (12.39/40-7.75) and was fifth in the hammer (30.85/101-2). First year Garner Miyagawa (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 12.76 meters (41-10.5).

Macalester hosts the Rider/Bolstorff Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 24-25 at Macalester Stadium.
