NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Macalester College men's track & field team had a record-breaking day at the Meet of Hearts, hosted by Carleton College on Saturday. The Scots set two school records and produced several top performances across multiple events.
Sophomore
John Ihrke (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) captured first place in the 1000m run with a time of 2:27.43, setting a new school record. First year
Donovan Connole (West Hartford, Conn./William H. Hall) had a productive meet, placing fifth in the 1000m with a time of 2:35.21, which ranks ninth in school history, and taking third in the mile run in 4:27.92.
The Scots showed depth in the 800m run, led by senior
Henry Schonebaum (Faribault, Minn./Faribault), who won the event in 2:01.67. Senior
Jay Lebakken (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) took third place in 2:04.44, followed closely by junior
Kelvin Moresi (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) in fourth with a time of 2:04.57.
In the distance events, senior
Tyler Edwards (Beaverton, Ore./Oregon Episcopal) placed third in the 3000m run with a time of 8:46.64, which ranks 10th in school history. Junior
Quinn Hoisington (Seattle, Wash./Lincoln) finished sixth in 8:49.39, while junior
Daniel Wiltse (Missoula, Mont./Hellgate) took eighth place in 8:57.73.
Senior
Sebastian Stefanowicz (Portland, Ore./Valley Catholic) had a standout meet in the sprints and hurdles. He finished third in the 55m dash with a time of 6.63, which ranks fourth in school history, and placed second in the 55m hurdles in 8.09, sixth all-time at Macalester. Senior
Hamza Mahamud (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) added a seventh-place finish in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.52.
First year
Andrew Lamb (Danville, Ky./Danville Independent) placed fifth in the 400m dash in 53.85, while senior
Thomas Malecha (Faribault, Minn.) finished seventh in the 600m run with a time of 1:27.96.
In the field events, sophomore
Ataa Mensah (St. Paul, Minn./Roseville) was a double scorer, taking second place in the triple jump with a mark of 14.19m, which ranks second in school history. He also placed sixth in the high jump, clearing 1.78m. First year
Garner Miyagawa (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) finished fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 12.68m.
Senior
Austin Mills (Eugene, Ore./Winston Churchill) won the weight throw with a distance of 17.25m, breaking his own school record. Sophomore
Artur Porto (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) took second place in the shot put with a mark of 13.77m.
The Scots will return to action next weekend in Northfield for their penultimate meet as they near the finale of their indoor season.
