Scots drop pair at Augsburg Invite

The Scots were handed their first two defeats of the season, dropping matches to Augsburg and Northwestern-Roseville in the second of two days of competition at the eight-team Augsburg Invitational in Minneapolis. The Auggies swept Macalester 25-21, 33-31 and 25-18, while Northwestern toppled the Scots by scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-18 in the tournament's fifth-place match. The Scots, who ranked second in the tourney with 1.9 serving aces per set, are now 4-2 on the year.

In the match with MIAC rival Augsburg, the Scots received nine kills from Sonia Muzikarova (Sr., Bratislava, Slovakia / Gymnazium Bilikova), while Taylor Tinkham (Fy., St. Louis Park, Minn.)and Majra Mucic (So., Zenica, Bosnia / St. Louis Park (Minn.)) each spiked six kills. Danielle Dweck (Fy., Glen Head, N.Y. / North Shore) had 24 assists.

Muzikarova also served seven aces and teammate Marie Godwin (Jr., Chaska, Minn.) added four aces to go along with a team-best 10 digs.  Muzikarova - had eight digs.

Godwin contributed 13 digs and six kills to lead the Macalester effort in the three-set loss to Northwestern. Muzikarova added six kills and Tinkham had three blocks. Mucic had five kills and two blocks.  Dweck produced 21 assists and finished ranked fourth in the tourney with 7.5 assists per set.

Muzikarova was named to the eight-player all-tournament team after ranking ninth among all players with 2.3 kills per set and second in aces (0.64 per set).

No. 8-ranked St. Thomas beat No. 19 Wisconsin-Eau Claire in a five-set battle to claim the tournament team title.  The Scots knocked off UW-Eau Claire earlier in the tourney.  St. Benedict beat Augsburg in the third-place match.

The Scots get a long break from action before hosting Carleton on Sept. 17 for the MIAC opener and the first match ever played at Mac's new Leonard Center.
