ST. PAUL, Minn. – For senior night, the Macalester College volleyball team hosted No. 22 Gustavus Adolphus for its second-to-last match of the season. Though the Scots made sets one and three close, they couldn't pull off the win against the MIAC's second-best squad to fall 3-0. The Gusties advance to 22-5 overall and 9-1 in the conference while Mac falls to 4-20 overall and 1-9 in the MIAC.
A serving run from sophomore
Elizabeth Joo (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian) that featured kills from sophomore
Adonia Anene (North Hollywood, Calif/The Buckley School) and first-year
Danielle Oji (Katy, Texas/Obra D. Tompkins) put the Scots in good position to start the first set. However, the Gusties responded with a pair of runs of their own, and Mac couldn't make up the ground the rest of the way. Anene logged six kills in the set, but Mac fell 25-18.
In the second set, Gusties found momentum out of the gates and rode it all the way to a 25-11 victory. Junior
Sydney Stratton (North Liberty, Iowa/Liberty) notched three kills and Joo registered four digs, but it wasn't enough.
The third set saw Macalester get its footing against its nationally-ranked foe when Anene led her squad on a five-point serving run. The Gusties bit back chunk by chunk, though, and got right back in it. Kills from Oji and Anene kept Mac afloat, but a late Gustie run proved fatal, and the Scots fell 25-22. Anene registered another six kills, junior setter
Hannah Morrow (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) registered 11 assists and five digs and Joo registered five digs of her own.
Morrow finished with 21 assists and 10 digs and Joo finished with 13 digs. Junior
MiLani Terrell (Cypress, Texas/Tomball Memorial) notched the Scots' lone ace of the game.
The Scots travel to Moorhead, Minn. on Saturday, Nov. 8 to finish their season against Concordia. The match will start at 5 p.m.
