COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- Macalester led twice in game one but couldn't hold on in the bottom of the seventh and couldn't slow down Saint John's in game two, dropping 5-4 and 20-3 decisions in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader, which had been pushed back a day due to inclement weather, Tuesday.
Joseph Aulisi turned in his second complete-game effort but, as happened last week, he would fall victim to a walk-off road loss. A leadoff walk, two bunt singles, a hit batsmen and a sacrifice fly would lead to the Johnnies' two runs in the bottom of the seventh of game one.
The Scots took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when
Peter Bertel led off the game with a double and eventually scored on an infield single by
Tom Forster, but Saint John's responded with three runs in their half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Macalester rebounded quickly by scoring three times in the sixth inning when
Quentin Stuart doubled to lead off the inning.
Greg Suber was walked and pinch ran for by
Lucas Babinec. One out later,
Nick Sia singled home Stuart with Babinec moving to third. Babinec would eventually score on a wild pitch and Babinec came home on a passed ball to give the Scots a 4-3 lead which they took into the bottom of the seventh before the Johnnies game-winning rally.
Aulisi worked six and one-third innings allowing five runs, four of which were earned on seven hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.
Alex Baretta gave Macalester an early 1-0 lead in game two when he led off the game with a single to left field and eventually scored on Stuart's infield single.
After the hosts scored three times to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first, the Scots scored twice in the second to tie the game. Bertel had another leadoff double and scored on a double by Baretta.
Jonathan Melms, who walked ahead of Baretta's double, then scored on Forster's base hit.
Collin Felhaber then settled down to shut out Macalester over the next four innings before Ben Etzell pitched a scoreless seventh.
Meanwhile, the Johnnies scored twice in their half of the second to regain the lead for good and then added two more in the third, scored five times in the fourth and eight times in the sixth to put the game away.
Baretta's 3-for-4 performance at the plate was the lone highlight of the game for the Scots, who get back to action immediately as they are scheduled to host Bethany Lutheran in a pair of non-conference games, Thursday, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
