Box Score 2 ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Several solid pitching performances highlighted Macalester's doubleheader split with Bethany Lutheran as the Scots came from six runs down in game one for a 12-9 win before the Vikings claimed the night cap, 5-4 in eight innings.
In game one, the visitors jumped out to a 7-1 lead after their first two trips to the plate but
Nick Mar's two-run double in the bottom of the second inning cut the Bethany Lutheran lead to 7-3.
Starter
Anson Justi, who struggled through the first two innings, worked a scoreless third and the Scots scored twice more in their half of the frame as
Quentin Stuart's sixth home run of the season cut the lead to 7-5.
Jamie Progebin came on to pitch the fourth and worked two scoreless innings while Macalester finally took the lead with a four-run fourth inning.
Alex Baretta drove in a run with a safety squeeze bunt before
Tom Forster hit a three run home run.
Nick McMullen homered to lead off the fifth inning, giving the Scots a 10-7 lead.
Progebin loaded the bases in the top of the sixth before giving way to
Doug Lewis, who struck out the first batter he faced before giving up a run scoring single. With the potential tying run on second base, Lewis then induced an inning-ending double play.
Forster's two-run triple in the sixth inning gave Macalester a 12-8 lead before
Brendan O'Connor came on to work the seventh, allowing an unearned run before getting the final out of the game.
The Scots would have to fight from behind again in game two as the Vikings scored in the top of the first before the hosts scored twice in their half of the inning. Alex Barerra walked with one out before a Forster double put runners on second and third.
Quentin Stuart then hit a sacrifice fly and
Collin Brantner followed with a run-scoring triple.
Bethany Lutheran scored another run in the second inning to tie the game but
Paul Schubring, making his first start of the season, would leave after three innings with the scored tied at 2-2.
Joe Trier would pitch the next five innings and was only hurt but a couple of pitches. The first being a two=run home run he allowed to Nick Caldeen in the fifth inning.
The Scots sent the game into extra innings in with two runs in the seventh. Mar walked with one out before a Baretta single. With two out and down to their last strike, Stuart then tripled in the two runners.
Trier who had allowed just one walk and two hits in his first four innings, then gave up a leadoff double to pinch-hitter Drew Quame and, one out later, an RBI single to Clay Anderson.
Macalester then loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth but Brandyn Olsen got two ground balls outs to end the threat and earn his first save.
Trier, despite taking the loss, allowed just three runs on four hits and a walk over five innings while striking out eight.
The Scots return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action, Saturday, when they host their final conference doubleheader of the season, entertaining Gustavus Adolphus in a twin bill schedule for a 2:30 p.m. start.
