Football: Macalester prepares for Midwest Conference opener

Scots face Ripon in North Division opener.

On Tap
Macalester will open Midwest Conference North Division play Saturday when they travel to Ripon, Wis., for a 1 p.m. contest versus the Ripon College Redhawks at Ingalls Field.

The Series
The Scots and Redhawks have met three times previously, with Ripon holding a 3-0 lead in the series. The teams' first meeting came in 2003 with the Redhawks claiming a 49-8 win. The Redhawks scored 56 points in consecutive seasons, 2004-05, garnering 56-35 and 56-7 wins in the last two meetings.

When Last We Met
Ripon ran out to a 22-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back in a 56-7 win the last time the teams met, Nov. 5, 2005 in Ripon.

The Redhawks opened the game by successfully recovering an on-side kick and needed just two plays to go 47 yards for the game's first score, just 32 seconds into the contest.

It was in that game that current Ripon coach Ron Ernst won his 105th game to become the school's all-time winningest coach.

Last Week
Macalester scored on its first five possessions and cruised to a 34-0 win at home over Knox. It was the largest margin of victory for the Scots since a 59-0 win over Trinity Bible College, at home, Oct. 20, 2012.

Samson Bialostock accounted for four of Macalester's five touchdowns in the game, passing for one and rushing for three others as he completed 10 of 16 passes for 116 yards and rushed for 51 yards on 11 carries.

Zandy Stowell scored the game's first two touchdowns, rushing 10 yards for the first before rumbling into the end zone from 19 yards out on a screen pass.

Go "Mid"West Young Men
Horace Greeley may have said "Go west, young man," but Macalester has chosen to go to the Midwest, the Midwest Conference, for football.

After 12 seasons as an independent, following their departure from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in football, the Scots are back in a football conference, competing in the MWC's North Division along with Beloit, Carroll, Lawrence, Ripon and St. Norbert. The South Division features Cornell, Grinnell, Illinois College, Knox, Lake Forest and Monmouth.

Macalester was picked fourth in North Division by the MWC Coaches' in the league's preseason poll. St. Norbert, which won the MWC title last season, was picked first in the North while Illinois College was picked to win the South Division.

He's the Boss
The 28th head coach in the 127-year history of Macalester football, Tony Jennison, is in his seventh season as the Scots' mentor. His six-plus seasons have seen his teams put together a 29-33 record, including a 23-19 mark over the last four-plus seasons.

A 1997 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, he was a part of four conference championship teams and two NCAA Division III championship teams as a collegian.

Jennison began his collegiate coaching career in 1998 at UW-Eau Claire as the defensive backs coach. In 2002, he took the defensive coordinator position at Marietta College before coming to coming to Macalester in 2005 in the same coaching position. He became the Scots' head coach in 2008.

Did You Know?
The last time Macalester won a conference game was Sept. 29, 2001, when the Scots defeated Carleton, 13-2, in a MIAC contest in Northfield, Minn.

The last time Macalester got off to a 3-1 start was in 2012. The Scots went onto finish that season with a 6-4 mark.

I'm a Cheesehead, Baby, The Pride of Wisconsin
The song title by the Group Cheeseheads With Attitude is apt for the 13 student-athletes on the Macalester roster who call Wisconsin home.

Outside of Minnesota, no state is more represented on the Macalester roster than Wisconsin and that group of 13 will play three games in their home state this weekend. The group includes defensive linemen Tristan Truttmann, Ryan Flanagan and Zach Hauser; running backs Zandy Stowell and Liam Peebles; linebackers Elliot Tanin, A.J. Imholte and Eric Seonbuchner; offensive linemen Eben Johnson, Djoser Ramsey and David McNichols; quarterback Jacob Simons; and wide receiver Tre Nowaczynski.

The Awards Show
Bradley Cox earned Midwest Conference Special Teams Performer of the Week honors for his efforts in Macalester's 34-0 win over Knox.

Cox blocked a punt to give Macalester possession of the ball on the Knox College 17-yard line on the fourth play of Saturday's 34-0 win over the Prairie Fire. The blocked kick set up the first of five consecutive touchdowns for the Scots.

Two Macalester student-athletes were recognized in week one of the season as Michael Abramson was also named the MWC Special Teams Performer of the Week and Ryan Fleming was named to the d3football.com Team of the Week.

Up Next
The Scots are back on the road in Wisconsin again next weekend when they travel to Beloit to face the Beloit College Buccaneers. Opening kickoff at Beloit's Strong Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
