Men’s Track & Field: Three School Records Broken at Meet of Hearts

| By:
NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Threw new school records propelled the Macalester College men's track & field team to second place with 158 points at Saturday's Meet of Hearts hosted by Carleton College. The Scots finished second in a field of seven competing teams: Gustavus Adolphus College, Martin Luther College, hosts Carleton, Minnesota-Morris, Crown College, and Bethany Lutheran College.

In the weight throw, junior Austin Mills (Eugene, Ore./ Winston Churchill) broke the school record with a toss of 15.83 meters (51-11), eclipsing the old mark of 15.74 (51-7.75) set in December by teammate senior Max Menache (Beverly Hills, Calif./ Beverly Hills). Senior Reece McKee (Charlottesville, Va./ Charlottesville) broke the school record in the mile, which had stood since 2009, with a time of 4:16.43. Wade Ekstrom '09 held the old record of 4:17.74. The third school record broken was in the 800 meters by first year John Ihrke (Northbrook, Ill./ Glenbrook North). His time of 1:54.83, overtaking the previous mark of 1:55.33 set by Nolan Ebner '18 in 2018. First year Karson Sammons (Portland, Ore./ Westview) won the 200 meters in 23.02 seconds, the 10th best mark in school history.

In addition to Mills, McKee, and Ihrke, the Scots had plenty more big finishes. Senior Arlo Heitler (Hastings, N.Y./ Hastings) was victorious in the 400 meters in a time of 48.99, good for second on Macalester's all-time list. Senior Riley Hodin (Buffalo, N.Y./ Amherst Central) won both the triple jump (13.06m/42-10.25) and long jump (6.55m/21-6), with his long jump ranking ninth in school history. Junior Tyler Edwards (Beaverton, Ore./ Oregon Episcopal) finished strong behind McKee in third place in the mile to slot himself third in school history at 4:18.35. Senior Kalid Ali (St. Paul, Minn./ Como Park) finished second in the 600 meters in 1:24.02, which ranks sixth all-time at Macalester.

The Scots will travel to Mankato, Minn. next weekend to compete in the Maverick Premier meet on Friday and Saturday.
