Men’s Swimming & Diving: Macalester Performs Well on Day 3 of the MIAC Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College men's swimming & diving team turned in several solid performances while remaining in fourth place after Day 3 of the MIAC Swimming & Diving Championships Friday evening at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. The Scots currently have 323.5 points in the team standings.

Senior Charles Batsaikhan (Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia/East Chapel Hill) registered another All-MIAC swim with a third-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.56. His time of 56.47 in the preliminaries broke his own school record of 56.55 set at last year's Championships. Junior Will St. John (McGaheysville, Va./East Rockingham) also made the A final of the 100-yard breaststroke and took eighth in 58.88.

First year Kean James Pajarillaga (Saipan, Marianas Pacific/Grace Christian Academy) took fifth in the 100-yard backstroke in 52.80, with junior Casey Meretta (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) winning the B final with a time of 54.59 to place ninth overall. Sophomore Thomas Moore (Philadelphia, Pa./Science Leadership Academy) made the A final in the 100-yard butterfly and finished sixth with a time of 51.44. Also qualifying for the A final was first year Max Taufen (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township), who took eighth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.27.

Junior diver Dylan Herlihy (Reading, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) qualified for the finals on the 3-meter board and placed eighth with a score of 344.0.

Other swimmers making the B final and scoring team points were seniors Adam Schroeder (Altadena, Calif./St. Francis) and Ramier Villarama (Bayonne, N.J./High Tech), who placed 13th and 15th, respectively in the 400-yard individual medley; first years Jack Schumacher (Golden, Colo./Lakewood) and Bode Thompson (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg), who were  10th and 12th, respectively in the 100 fly; first year Boden Allen (Los Angeles, Calif./Redondo Union), sophomore Ryan Mickelborough (Andover, Minn./Andover) and first year Tilghman Overton (Chestertown, Md./Gunston Day School), who finished 11th, 13th and 15th in the 200 free; and senior Ben Lewin (Beachwood, Ohio/Beachwood) and junior Alec Chen (Edina, Minn./Edina), who took 14th and 16th in the 100 breaststroke.

The Scots closed out the night with a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of senior Isaac Kisker (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood), Batsaikhan, Meretta and Moore swam a time of 1:24.87.

The final day of the MIAC Swimming & Diving Championships is Saturday, Feb. 22. The morning session starts at 10:30 a.m., with the evening session beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.
