Men’s Track & Field: McKee Sets School Record, Scots Dominate Meet of the Hearts

NORTHFIELD, Minn. –  The Macalester men's track & field team dominated the Meet of the Hearts today, hosted by Carleton. The Scots registered the most top finishers in the meet, including junior Reece McKee (Charlotte, Va./Charlottesville) who set a school record in the 3000m.
 
McKee ran the 3000m in a winning time of 8:32.30. This time broke the school record by more than two seconds. Joe Giamberdino '15 previously held the record with a time of 8:34.63. Also, in the 3000m, fellow junior Ben Crotteau (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast) set a personal best time of 8:36.58 to take second. In the 55m, junior Sylvain Zong-Naba (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso/Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong) took second with a time of 6.83. The Scots registered a 1-2 in the 55m hurdles. Sophomore Sebastian Stefanowicz (Portland, Ore./Valley Catholic) won with a time of 8.25. This is the ninth best time in program history. Fellow sophomore Hamza Mahamud (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) came in just behind him with a time of 8.37. Junior Arlo Heitler (Hastings, N.Y./Hastings) won the 200m in a time of 22.64.
 
First year Charlie Pierce (Milwaukee, Wis./Shorewood) took second in the 400m with a time of 55.65. In the 600m, sophomores Henry Schonebaum (Faribault, Minn./Faribault) (1:25.11), Thomas Malecha (Faribault, Minn.) (1:25.91), and Jay Lebakken (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) (1:27.89) finished first, third, and fourth respectively. First year Kelvin Moresi (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) won the 800m (2:01.26) while fellow first year Daniel Wiltse (Missoula, Mont./Hellgate) came in just behind (2:01.66). Junior Kalid Ali (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park) took fifth in the event (2:02.95).  In the mile, the Scots put in four of the top 10 times. Senior Drew Getty (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) (4:27.69) took third, sophomore Jordan Galloway (Portland, Ore./Grant) (4:28.81) took fourth, senior Alexander Fendig (Chevy Chase, Md./Sandy Spring Friends School) (4:32.43) took sixth, and Pierce (4:35.69) took seventh. In the 1000m, junior Tor Olsson (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) (2:36.66) and Getty (2:36.79) placed fourth and fifth. The 4x400m relay team of Heitler, Schonebaum, Malecha, and Ali won with a time of 3:31.60.
 
In the field, sophomore Austin Mills (Eugene, Ore./Winston Churchill) won the weight throw with a mark of 14.06m (46' 1.5"). Junior Aiden Yang (Eugene, Ore./South Eugene) took third with a mark of 11.96m (39' 3"). Mills and Yang took third and seventh respectively in the shot put with marks of 12.09m (39' 8") and 10.62m (34' 10.25"). Yang's mark was a personal record. Junior Riley Hodin (Buffalo, N.Y./Amherst Central) won the triple jump with a mark of 13.23m (43' 5").
 
The Scots' next meet will be Saturday February 17. The Scots compete at the St. Olaf Tostrud Classic in Northfield, Minn.
