TUCSON, Ariz. -- Runs in the ninth inning, to Carleton, and in the eighth inning, to Augsburg, spelled the difference as Macalester dropped 6-5 and 8-7 decisions to their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes on the final day of its spring trip.
After the Knights scored in the bottom of the first, the Scots answered in the top of the second as consecutive one-out singles by
Quentin Stuart,
Greg Suber and
Phillip Stuhr tied the game.
Carleton broke the tie with a three-run third when, with two out, they collected a pair of hits before
Lucas Babinec walked four consecutive batters, three with the bases loaded, but he would settle down to escape the inning and pitch a scoreless fourth and fifth before turning the ball over to
Brendan O'Connor, who worked two scorless, gving him nine and one-third innings off work on the trip without allowing a run.
Trailing, 4-2, heading into the top of the ninth, Macalester got a leadoff double from Suber and Stuhr singled before Josh Johnson, who came on in relief of Thaddeus Gregory in the eitghth, got a pair of strikeouts. Nick Mar then came on to pinch hit with two out and runners on the corners and, after taking a strike, lifted a fly ball to left stayed inside the four pole and easily cleared the fence for a go-ahead three-run home run.Carleton answered in the bottom of the ninth by getting a leadoff double from Cody Bohlman and a single from Willie Freimuth, who advance to second on a throwing error, The Scots then walked Hay Tsutsui before Nolan Baker doubled home the tying and winning runs.The Scots began game two by by scoring four runs in the top of the first inning versus the Auggies as one run scored on an error,
Peter Bertel and
Collin Brantner picked up RBI singles and Ben Castegnetti's fielder's choice ground out plated another run.
However, after scoring four runs on five hits against Augsburg starter Jordan Brandt, Macalester would get shut down by Ryan Mestnik, who pitched scoreless ball over the next four innings before giving up a run in the sixth.
The Auggies, who had scored twice in the fourth, tied the game with a three-run sixth and took an 8-5 lead with three more runs in the eighth to set up another finish which would come down the the game's final at bat.
Phillip Stuhr collected a one-out pinch hit before
Jonathan Melms, who had come on as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the seventh, hit a ball down the first base line, which skimmed first base and went all the way into the right field corner for a triple. He then scored on
Nick Sia's sacrifice fly before Loren Hochmuth finished the game with a strikeout.
Sam Berk went 4-for-4 with a double and two runs in the game and, including a base hit versus Carleton, finished with five hits on the day to give him a team best .516 batting average for the the 10-game trip.
The Scots come away from their spring trip with a 6-4 record and will be off for eight days before opening Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next Saturday with a doubleheader versus Bethel at Nicholson Field. The first pitch of the twinbill is slated for 1 p.m.
