ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- A five-run second inning in game one and a four-run fourth inning in game two enabled Bethel to pick up 9-5 and 7-2 wins over Macalester in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener.
The doubleheader was originally slated for Macalester's Nicholson Field but, due to field conditions, was moved to Bethel's Hargis Park, and the Royals enjoyed the unexpected home-field advantage.
After scoring five in the second inning of game one off Macalester starter
Lucas Babinec, two of which were unearned, Bethel scored twice off
Dylan Edwards-Gaherty in both the third and sixth innings.
Trailing by nine runs in the final at bat, the Scots put together a five-run seventh inning as
Collin Brantner's RBI double plated
Ben Castagnetti with Macalester's first run and
Alex Baretta drove home Brantner with a base hit.
Nick Mar then hit his second three-run home run of the season to cut the Bethel lead to four runs before Matt Herringshaw induced a ground out to end the game.
Bethel took advantage of eight walks and a hit batter as the Royals were outhit by the Scots, 7-4. Four of Macalester's seven hits went for extra bases as Castagnetti and
Sam Berk also doubled.
Game two saw the team's trade second-inning runs with Castagnetti's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning drawing the Scots even.
However, a four-run fourth inning saw the Royals take a lead which they would not relinquish.
The Scots would get a final run in the bottom of the sixth when Berk scored on a double steal with
Peter Bertel but Bethel added two insurance runs in the ninth off reliever
Brendan O'Connor, ending his consecutive innings scoreless streak at 15 1/3 innings.
Now 6-6 overall on the season, Macalester is scheduled to open the home portion of its 2015 slate Wednesday versus fourth-ranked St. Thomas. Game one of the twin bill is scheduled to get underway at 2:30 p.m.
