Baseball: Six-game winning streak comes to end with losses to Illinois Tech

Scarlet Hawks silence Scot bats in doubleheader sweep.

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Macalester's six-game winning streak came to an end as Illinois Tech handed the Scots a pair of losses, 6-5 and 5-3, in a doubleheader at the Kino Sports Complex.

The teams traded two runs apiece in their respective halves of the first inning but it was a four-run fourth which allowed the Scarlet Hawks to take the opening game, using 10 walks from Macalester pitchers to their advantage,

Nick Sia and Nick Mar both had two hits for the Scots while Greg Suber drove in a pair of runs.

Game two saw the Scots overcome an early 2-0 deficit when Illinois Tech scored twice again in the first inning but the Scots pieced together single runs in the second and third innings to tie the game.

The Scarlet Hawks scored twice in the top of the fifth but Macalester could answer with just one run despite loading the bases in its half of the fifth.

The Scots had a season-low five hits in the game but coaxed eight walks and a hit batsmen from the Illinois Tech pitchers.

Macalester rounds out its 10-game Arizona trip against a pair of familiar foes, Friday, facing Carleton, at 9:00 a.m. PDT, and Augusburg, at 12:30 p.m.
