Baseball: Macalester gets offensive in second-day wins

McMullen's four home runs lead Scots offensive explosion.

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Macalester hit seven home runs, including a pair grand slams, among its 43 hits on the day en route to a 26-10 win over Winnipeg and a 21-7 win over Carroll on day two of the Tucson Invitational.

Nick McMullen led the offensive outburst with four home runs, hitting two in each game, while tallying 10 RBI on the day.

In the opener versus Winnipeg, the Wesmen scored two runs in each of the first two innings to take an early 4-0 lead. The Scots got on the board with a three-run second inning as Collin Brantner's triple plated Greg Suber. Phil Wettersten would single to score Brantner and Wettersten later scored on Alex Baretta's base hit to make it a 4-3 game.

Both teams scored single runs in third before a five-run fourth gave Macalester the lead for good. Alex Dash led off the inning with a walk and eventually came around to score on a fielder's choice ground by Scott Foltz. One batter later, McMullen took a 2-2 pitch over the wall in center field to break the 5-5 tie and send his team onto victory.

McMullen's two home runs and six RBI were the highlight of the game for the Scots, but all nine starters picked up hits in the game, with eight collecting multi-hit games. Brantner and Suber both had four-hit games to lead the way while Baretta and Wettersten both had three. Foltz added five RBI as he doubled twice in the game.

The victory on the mound went to Sean O'Brien, who worked two innings of scoreless relief, allowing a hit and two walks while striking out one.

Macalester wasted no time in taking the lead in game two as Nick Sia and Phillip Stuhr both singled the start the game before Tom Forster walked. Quentin Stuart then followed by hitting the first pitch he saw over the right-center field fence to give the Scots a 4-0 lead.

They extended that lead to 6-0 in the second when Sia led off the inning with a walk. Two outs later, Stuart again hit the first pitch he saw, this time over the left-center field wall,

The onslaught kicked into high gear in the third inning when Macalester scored seven runs in the third inning to take a 13-0 lead, ignited by McMullen's two-run home run.

The only inning in which the Scots would not score was the sixth. Carroll scored five runs in the middle three innings to make the score 15-5 but Macalester answered with three runs in the seventh, two on a McMullen home run and another on Stuhr's home run and Ryan Fleming followed with two innings of scoreless relief to put a halt to the Pioneer's rally.

Stuhr, Forster and Sam Berk each had three hits in the game while Stuart had six RBI and McMullen four to lead the offense. Once again, all nine starters picked up at least one hit in the game as 10 of the Scots' 20 hits went for extra bases.

Sam Thomas worked five innings, allowing three runs on five hits, walking seven and fanning five, to earn his first career victory.

Macalester is back in action Sunday morning as the Scots take on Concordia-Chicago in a 9 a.m. contest at the Kino Sports Complex.
