TUCSON, Ariz. -- Lucas Babinec went seven and one-third innings in his first appearance of the season and Macalester continued its winning ways to start the 2015 season, taking a 9-3 victory from Concordia-Chicago.
The Scots got all the runs they would need in the second inning as
Sam Berk doubled with one out and
Nick Mar followed with a bunt single.
Nick McMullen then singled through the left side to drive in the game's first run and, one out later,
Jonathan Melms singled home the game's second run. Macalester got its third run of the inning when Melms and McMullen executed a double steal and, after a walk to
Nick Sia,
Phillip Stuhr singled to give the Scots a 4-0 lead.
Macalester would eventually extend its lead to 9-0 as Babinec cruised through the Cougar lineup, pitching shutout ball through seven innings, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out four.
However, he tired in the eighth before giving way to
Forest Redlin, who came on with the bases loaded and gave up a sacrifice fly before working out of the inning. After allowing a leadoff walk in the ninth, Redlin then retired the last three batters, getting a strikeout to end the game.
As he was Saturday, when he hit four home runs, McMullen led the Scots' offense by collecting a pair of hits while scoring three runs and stealing four bases. Berk had three hits on the day, all of which went for extra bases as he doubled twice and tripled. Sia and Stuhr also had two hits on the day as Macalester collected 13 hits on the day.
The Scots have an off day Monday before returning to action Tuesday when they will face Concordia-Wis., for the second time on the trip, at 9 a.m. PDT.
