TUCSON, Ariz. -- Nick Sia's grand slam home run gave Macalester a two-run lead and sparked an eight-run sixth inning and the Scots scored 16 runs in their final three at bats to post a 20-7 win over Concordia-Wis.
After the Falcons took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, Macalester responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning when
Quentin Stuart led off with a double and
Sam Berk was hit by a pitch. The pair moved up a base on a wild pitch and Stuart scored the game's first run when Concordia catcher Bryan Thomas' throw to third went into left field.
Peter Bertel followed with a single to put runners on the corner's and
Nick McMullen's ground out moved both base runners, with Berk scoring the game's second run.
Ben Castagnetti followed with an RBI single and then scored from first when
Jonathan Melms followed with a double down the left field line.
The Falcons scored a run on a double-play ground out in the fourth to cut the lead to one and took a 7-4 lead with four unearned runs in the fifth.
Bertel would begin and finish the Scots' sixth-inning rally as he was hit by a pitch and scored when Melms reached on a fielder's choice with Concordia unable to record an out on the play. On the next pitch, Sia connected for his first career home run to give Macalester a 9-7 lead and the Scots would never look back.
Two outs later, Stuart singled and Berk followed with a walk before Bertel finished the rally with his first career home run to give Macalester a 12-7 lead.
The Scots' offense, which was hitting a sizzling .398 through its first four games, did not slow as they five runs on six hits in the seventh inning as Melms led off with a singled and was replaced at first when Sia grounded into a fielder's choice out. He promptly stoled second and moved to third on
Nick Mar's base hit before scoring on a
Tom Forster base hit.
Stuart followed that with an RBI single and Berk was hit by a pitch to load the bases. One out later,
Greg Suber plated a pair of runs with a base hit and Berk scored the final run of the inning on an RBI single by
Phillip Stuhr.
The Scots final three runs came in the eighth inning when pinch hitter
Phil Wettersten led off with a doubled and, after Sia singled, scored on Mar's sacrifice fly.
Collin Brantner came on as a pinch hitter and promptly singled before
Alex Dash did the same to bring home Sia.
Scott Foltz, also pinch hitting, finished the rally with a sacrifice fly.
Brendan O'Connor, who worked three innings of scoreless relief for a save, Friday, in a 5-4 win over Concordia, picked up the victory by working four and one-third innings of scoreless relief. He allowed four hits while walking one and striking out three.
Macalester is in action again tomorrow with a single, nine-inning, game on the slate as the Scots take on Marian at 3 p.m. PDT.
