Scots gain hard-fought 5-4 win over St. John’s

Macalester won its second straight 5-4 battle when it topped St. John's Saturday at Lifetime Fitness 98th Street Club in Bloomington and has clinched the No. 5 seed in next weekend's MIAC tournament.  The Scots even their overall record to 9-9 and MIAC mark to 4-4.

Needing to win the final two singles matches remaining, the Scots picked up third-set comeback victories from Stephen Tyndel (Jr., Toronto, Ont. / City Academy) at No. 3 and Max Edwards (Jr., Rochester, Minn. / Mayo) at No. 4.  Tyndel won a third-set tiebreaker 10-3 and Edward won his tie-breaker 10-4.  Both trailed in set two after dropping the first set.

Picking up Mac's third singles win was Max Soghikian (So., Piedmont, Calif.) at No. 6.

The Scots went 2-1 in doubles action with a couple close wins.  Tyndel and Chris Fowler (Sr., Toronto, Ont. / Royal St. George's) won at No. 2 (8-6) and Edwards and Soghikian pulled out a 9-7 triumph at No. 3.

After closing out the regular season tomorrow against Carleton at Highland Park High School at 2:30 p.m., Macalester will play No. 4 seed St. Thomas in an MIAC quarter-final match Friday (May 4) in St. Peter at 3 p.m.  Gustavus and Carleton receive first round byes and the other first-round match pits St. Olaf against St. John's.  MIAC tournament website
