ST. PETER, Minn. – The Macalester College men's tennis team traveled to Gustavus to compete in the ITA Regional and Midwest Open, held Friday through Sunday.
In singles play at the ITA Regional, sophomore
Charles Flaman (Calgary, Alberta/Rundle College) received a first-round bye then won in the second round over Max Guilliford of Hamline, 6-0, 6-0. He then lost to Gustavus' Yash Bahalkar, 6-1, 7-6. Sophomore
Derek Chen (South Kingstown, R.I./Moses Brown School) also played in the singles draw and lost to Daniel Moeller of UW-Whitewater in a tie-breaker, 6-3, 1-6, 10-6. Flaman and Chen teamed up in the doubles draw and defeated Adam Culp and Keanu Lin from UW-Superior, 8-3 before falling to the No. 9-seeded team of Josh Tiemann and Anthony Schulte from Coe, 8-6. Kangyu Li (Shanhai, China/Shanghai Southwest Weiyu) and first year
Alexander Coleman (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) topped Concordia's Brandt Aslakson and Kai Kringle, 8-6 before falling to fourth-seeded Maxi Gutbezahl and Alexander Doane, 8-7.
In the B Draw of the Midwest Open, sophomore
Zac Regelman (Weston, Mass./Weston) won four singles matches to advance to the semifinals, where he lost to Hamline's Truman Vogel, 6-4, 6-1. Li defeated Cale Voge of Hamline before losing in the second round to Ethan Beal of Gustavus. Coleman and junior
Beckett Annes (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) also played in the singles B Draw and lost their first-round matches. Annes also played in the consolation draw and beat Carroll's Carl Oback, then lost to Seth Kogutkiewicz of St. Norbert.
In the C Draw, first year
Sebastian Diaz (Bogota, Colombia/Colegio Neuva Granada) won his first two matches against Jon Olafsson of Edgewood and Ryan Bitz of Concordia before losing to Beck Sissel of UW-La Crosse. First year
Eric Yang (Satellite Beach, Fla./Westshore) won two singles matches in the D Draw against UW-La Crosse's Nathan Rose and Loras' Andrew Day before falling to Harry Stokes of St. Scholastica.
Doubles teams of Annes and Yang, and Diaz and Regelman played in the B doubles draw and lost their first matches.
Macalester will resume its season in the spring.
