OWATONNA, Minn. – The Macalester College men's tennis team battled Wartburg College in a non-conference dual on Saturday at West Hills Tennis and Fitness Center, eventually falling, 4-3. The loss is the first defeat of the season for the Scots, who are now 2-1. The Knights improve to 2-2.
Macalester's No. 3 doubles tandem of first years
Alexander Coleman (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) and
Eric Yang (Satellite Beach, Fla./Westshore) won their match, but Wartburg won at first and second doubles to take the doubles point. In singles, the Scots were victorious in the first three matches that finished to take a 3-1 lead. Sophomore
Charles Flaman (Calgary, Alberta/Rundle College) defeated Ezequiel Viteri, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, sophomore
Derek Chen (South Kingstown, R.I./Moses Brown School) topped Cole Palese, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Coleman won hist match at No. 4 singles against John Gustafson, 6-3, 6-0.
After the Knights won at No. 5 singles, Macalester came close to taking one more match to clinch the dual until Robert Matera came back to defeat sophomore
Zac Regelman (Weston, Mass./Weston) at No. 6 singles in a tie-breaker, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7). Wartburg took the final match at No. 3 singles to win, 4-3.
Macalester hosts UW-Superior on Sunday, Sept. 20, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Hayden Tennis Courts.
