Laura Avena (Jr., Cesis, Latvia / Riga Gimnasium #1) produced a season-best 26 of her team's 41 kills and hit .292 on the match, but St. Olaf won the third and fourth sets to defeat Macalester 3-1 in Northfield to hold off the upset bid and stay in the chase for an MIAC post-season spot. Set scores in this competitive match were 25-18, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-13.
Avena leads the conference in kills (3.91 per set) and is among the NCAA Division III leaders in points, kills and aces, had 26 kills against just five errors in 72 total attempts.
The Scots had three players in double digits in digs:
Glasha Marcon (Sr., Richmond, Calif. / Albany) with 20 to reach that level for the fourth time this year, Avena with 14 and
Cora Trout (Fy., Columbia, Mo. / Rock Bridge) with 10. Setting up the team's kills were
Anna Munson (So., La Crosse, Wis. / Central) with 19 assists and
Kasey McMaster (Fy., Oak Ridge, Tenn.) with 12.
St. Olaf was led at the net by Melissa Burch with 16 kills and Ari Carlson with 14. Kerten Bork dished out 44 set assists.
The Oles move up to 8-18 overall and 6-4 in the MIAC. Macalester is 7-19 overall, 0-10 in the conference.
Macalester winds down the campaign Friday (Oct. 26) at St. Catherine.
