Game 1 |
Game 2
James Murrey (Jr., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out 13, as the Scots won the opening game at Macalester's new baseball field 3-0 over St. Mary's, while
Alex Ingram (So., Chicago, Ill. / Morgan Park Academy) and
Will Chen (Jr., Edina, Minn.) combined for another 3-0 shutout victory in the nightcap as the Scots claim their first two MIAC victories of the season.
Murrey has been dominant in his last three starts, fanning 37 batters while walking just three in 21 innings. The two-time All-MIAC pick, Murrey ranked second in the league in K's in each of his first two seasons and this year is striking out 11.1 batters for every seven innings pitched. Murrey allowed just five balls to leave the infield and did not walk a batter for the second game in a row. At one point, nine out of 10 SMU outs were registered by strikeouts.
Mac pitching was nearly equally impressive in game two. Ingram worked the first five innings for his second win, striking out six, and Chen finished off the five-hit shutout by pitching the final two frames for his first career save.
Macalester received two hits and two runs in the opener from
Nate Wilson-Traisman (Jr., Eugene, Ore. / South Eugene). The Scots scored their runs on a wild pitch, sacrifice fly and fielder's choice.
Robert Engle (Jr., Sunnyvale, Calif. / St. Lawrence) went 3-for-3 as the Scots out-hit the Cards 12-5 in the second game. Collecting a pair of hits each were
Devin English (Jr., Annapolis, Md. / DeMatha), Wilson-Traisman and
Nathan Rubin (Fy., Venice, Fla.). The red-hot Wilson-Traisman went 4-for-7 on the day and is now hitting .473 on the year (35-for-74).
Macalester snaps a seven-game skid and on the season is now 10-12 overall and 2-4 in the MIAC. The Cardinals fall to 4-14 overall and 0-6 in MIAC competition.
