ST. PAUL, Minn. - Macalester College sophomore
John Ihrke (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) has qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships in the 800 meters, the NCAA announced on Sunday. The top 20 athletes who declare in each event qualify for the NCAA Championships, which will be held March 13-14 in Birmingham, Ala.
Ihrke ran a school-record time of 1:52.48 at the University of Minnesota's Snowshoe Open on Feb. 20. His converted time of 1:50.90 ranks eighth among athletes who have declared for the national meet in the 800. In addition to his record in the 800, Ihrke also broke the school records in the 1000 meters and the mile this season. He finished second in the 1000 at the MIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 28 to earn All-MIAC honors.
Ihrke is schedule to run in the 800 preliminary heats on Friday, March 13 at 4:00 p.m. Central time. The top eight finishers in the prelims advance to Saturday's finals at 5:00 p.m. The meet will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.
