Men’s Track & Field: Heitler Posts School Record and Likely Qualifying Time at Wartburg Final Qualifier

| By:
WAVERLY, Iowa - Macalester College senior Arlo Heitler (Hastings, N.Y./Hastings) and first year John Ihrke (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) broke the school records, as a small contingent of the men's track & field team competed at the Wartburg Final Qualifier Saturday afternoon.

Heitler, who placed third in the 400 meters last weekend at the MIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships to earn All-MIAC honors, won the 400 on Saturday with a school-record time of 48.53. The time moves Heitler up from 31st on the Division III performance list to 13th, likely qualifying him for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The old mark of 48.89 was set by David Palmer '20 in 2020.

A couple of MIAC champions competed in the 800 meters on Saturday. Ihrke, who won the 800 at the MIAC Championships with a school-record time of 1:54.53, broke his record with a time of 1:53.57 to finish fourth. The time ranks 29th in Division III. Senior Kalid Ali (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park), who captured the MIAC 600-meter title, placed 14th in 1:58.31.

In the weight throw, junior Austin Mills (Eugene, Ore./Winston Churchill) finished 11th with a throw of 15.99 (52-5.5), one spot ahead of senior Max Menache (Beverly Hills, Calif./Beverly Hills) in 12th with a toss of 14.72 (48-3.5).

The top 20 athletes who declare in each event will be selected to compete at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships on Mar. 14-15 in Rochester, N.Y. The field will be announced on Sunday, Mar. 9 on NCAA.com.
