MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College women's swimming & diving team picked up its first two individual titles on the third day of the MIAC Swimming & Diving Championships, held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center Friday night. The Scots sit in second place with 428 points heading into the final day, 32 points behind Gustavus for first place.
Junior
Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) repeated as MIAC champion in the 100-yard breaststroke, winning with a school-record time of 1:04.89. She set the previous mark of 1:04.93 at last year's MIAC Championships. In the next women's event in the pool, senior
Verity Wray-Raabolle (Owatonna, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) returned to the top of the podium in the 100-yard backstroke, taking first in 55.68. Yesterday, Wray-Raabolle broke the school record with a time of 55.17 on the first leg of the 400-yard medley relay, which the Scots won. That time is an NCAA 'B' cut qualifying time.
Senior
Caroline Chapon (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) almost made it three champions on Friday, as she placed second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.79. Senior
Olga Merkadeau (Lafayette, Calif./The College Preparatory School) made the A final and finished seventh in 1:00.23, while seniors
Olivia Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Shorewood) and
Eleanor Petrin (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) qualified for the B final and took 12th and 14th, respectively.
Macalester qualified several swimmers for the A and B finals. In the 400-yard individual medley, juniors
Nadia Lanz (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and
Hannah Zurn (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) made the A final and finished fourth and sixth, respectively, with first year
Molly Nuckolls (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) making the B final and taking ninth. First years
Maya Tellez (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) and
Amalia Shields (Madison, Wis./Madison West) swam in the A final of the 200-yard freestyle and placed third and sixth, respectively, with Tellez earning All-MIAC honors. Seniors
Skye Schmit (Stillwater, Minn.) and
Natalie Pollock (Madison, Wis./Madison West) made the B final of the 200 free and finished 10th and 11th, respectively. First year
Carolyn Wolking (Shoreline, Wash./Holy Names Academy) joined Uhlhorn-Thornton in the A final of the 100-yard breaststroke and took seventh.
In the final event of the night, the 200-yard freestyle relay of Wray-Raabolle, Pollock, Merkadeau and Chapon finished second with a school-record time of 1:35.81, shattering the old mark of 1:37.32 set in 2023.
Macalester wraps up the MIAC Swimming & Diving Championships on Saturday, Feb. 22 with sessions at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. The Scots have never finished higher than third at the MIAC Championships in the history of the program.
