ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Macalester College men's track and field team hosted the Vanessa Seljeskog Classic in the Leonard Center today and left victorious with 165 points as they topped second-place Hamline by just two points.
First year Karson Sammons (Portland, Ore./Westview) recorded the Scots' first win of the day on the track in the 400m with a time of 53.06. After that win, the Scots placed the top three runners in the 600m with first year John Ihrke (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) leading the way with a time of 1:23.31, good for fourth in program history. Juniors Henry Schonebaum (Faribault, Minn./Faribault) and Thomas Malecha (Faribault, Minn.) followed Ihrke with 1:27.38 and 1:30.74 finishes respectively. The Scots dominated the 3000 in similar fashion, as senior Reece McKee (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville), Ihrke, junior Tyler Edwards (Beaverton, Ore./Oregon Episcopal) and first year Jack Riley (Wrenshall, Minn./Wrenshall) claimed the top four spots in 8:43.74, 8:51.57, 8:52.19 and 9:30.60 respectively.
In the field, first year Artur Porto (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) won the shot put with a 13.62m (44' 8.25") throw, the ninth-best mark in program history. Junior Austin Mills (Eugene, Ore./Winston Churchill) won the weight throw with a 15.33m (50' 3.5") toss that marked the second-best distance in program history and placed second in the shot put with a 12.11m (39' 8.75") throw. Senior Max Menache (Beverly Hills, Calif./Beverly Hills) placed second in the weight throw with 13.78m (45' 2.5") and third in the shot put with 11.79m (38' 8.25").
The Scots continue their indoor season next weekend at the Mark Shuck Open & Multi on Saturday, Feb. 1 in Mankato, Minn.
