ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Macalester College men's track and field team competed in day one of the MIAC Championships today. The Scots finished the day with 32 points and sit third in the standings, behind St. Olaf and St. John's.
Sophomore
Tor Olsson (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) who was seeded sixth in the 1500m, became a MIAC Champion this afternoon. He set a personal record of 3:54.00 to take first. This is the second-fastest time in Macalester history. Olsson becomes the first outdoor track & field MIAC Champion since 2016.
Multiple other Scots scored points this afternoon as well. Sophomore
Reece McKee (Charlottesville, VA./Charlottesville) finished seventh in the 1500m with a personal record time of 3:58.17. In the field, senior
Victor Wright (Cape Coral, Fla./Mariner) and sophomore
Max Menache (Beverly Hills, Calif./Beverly Hills) scored in the discus throw and received All-MIAC Honorable Mention recognition. Wright finished fourth with a mark of 41.87m (137' 4") while Menache finished eighth. Menache received All-MIAC honors with a third-place finish in the hammer throw. He set a personal record with a mark of 49.59m (162' 8"), which is the third best in school history. Junior
Caleb Williams (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) took sixth in the long jump, with a leap of 6.63m (21' 9.00"). The 4x800m relay team, consisting of Olsson, sophomores
Ben Crotteau (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast) and
Kalid Ali (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park), and first year
Jay Lebakken (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) finished fourth with a time of 7:55.45, the sixth best time in school history, and All-MIAC Honorable Mention honors.
Several Scots had strong showings in preliminary rounds today and will compete tomorrow in the final heats. First year
Hamza Mahamud (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) finished eighth in the 110m hurdles preliminary, setting a personal best time of 15.99. Sophomore
Arlo Heitler (Hastings, N.Y./Hastings) qualified for the finals in both the 200m, taking sixth (22.04) and the 400m, taking fourth (48.39). Fellow sophomore
Jeff Wang (Harleysville, Pa./North Penn) took fifth in the 400m hurdles preliminaries (56.23) and will compete in tomorrow's finals.
The Scots will finish out the MIAC Outdoor Championships tomorrow in Arden Hills, Minn.
