ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team opened its 2021 season with a 2-1 victory over St. Olaf in an exhibition game Friday night at Macalester Stadium. The Scots are scheduled to play three exhibition games this spring.
In the 20th minute, senior
Yukeria Haywood (Stone Mountain, Ga./Marist School) sent a corner kick from the right side to sophomore
Lily Lorenzen (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco). Lorenzen headed the ball into the net from five yards out to give the Scots a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the 65th minute, when senior
Aliya Mahmoud (Portland, Ore./Catlin Gable) sent a long through ball to sophomore
Julia Kispert (Atherton, Calif./Menlo-Atherton), who beat the goalkeeper on a breakaway for the second goal of the game. The Oles' Grace Maxwell ended the shutout bid of junior goalkeeper
Dana Gustafson (Ames, Iowa/Ames) with a goal in the 71st minute. But the Scots held on to win on a night the team honored its seniors before the game.
Macalester returns to action on Saturday, April 3 with another exhibition against St. Catherine University. The game starts at 11:00 a.m. at Macalester Stadium.
