SUPERIOR, Wis. – Two second-half goals broke a 1-1 halftime tie, as the Macalester College women's soccer team picked up a non-conference win over UW-Superior, 3-1 Tuesday night at SCCU Stadium. The Scots head into their final regular-season game with a record of 8-6-2, while the Yellowjackets fall to 8-6-4.
The win is the fourth in a row for Macalester, which is 5-0-1 in its past six games.
In the 29th minute, UW-Superior had trouble clearing a Macalester corner kick, with one clearance attempt going right to junior forward
Annelise McGee (Stonington, Conn./Stonington). McGee's shot bounced off the hands of goalkeeper Quinn Clark and into the goal for a 1-0 lead. Less than six minutes later, Brook Judnick answered for the Yellowjackets to tie the score at 1-1.
In the second half, first year midfielder
Evelyn Savoie (Northbridge, Mass./Marianopolis Preparatory School) stole the ball deep in UW-Superior territory and passed it to junior midfielder
Adi Nhouyvanisvong (Wayzata, Minn./Minnetonka), who found sophomore
Erica Hamilton (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter) at the top of the penalty area. Hamilton wheeled to her left and hit a shot from 20 yards out into the right side of the goal to restore the Scots' lead in the 54th minute. Five minutes later, Savoie dribbled up the middle and slipped a pass to first year forward
Mikayla Edmunds (Falls Church, Va./Georgetown Visitation) on the right. Edmunds beat Clark from six yards out for a 3-1 advantage.
The Yellowjackets managed two shots on goal the rest of the way, with junior goalkeeper
Ramatoulaye Bah (Paris, France/United World College Maastricht) making both saves. Bah played the final 18 minutes in goal, while sophomore
Lily Salazar (Oakland, Calif./Bentley Upper School) started and made one save in her 72 minutes of action. Clark registered six saves, as the Scots held an 18-10 advantage in shots taken.
Macalester concludes the regular season with a home game against Bethel University on Saturday, Nov. 1. A win clinches a spot in the MIAC Playoffs for the Scots. The game starts at 1:00 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
